Recipe of the Week: Mi Mi’s Pizza Dough

Posted & filed under Recipes.

This is the pizza dough recipe that my Mi Mi (my father’s mother Rose, where I get my middle name from!) would make on every Christmas Eve. I just recently learned that my Mom has been preparing this recipe for the past 30 years…no wonder I LOVE my Mom’s homemade pizza. My Mi Mi would make fresh homemade pizzas all throughout the night on Christmas Eve in addition to breaded and fried smelts, shrimp and a big salad….not to mention all of her desserts!MiMi and Angela

This is a photo of Mi Mi and me on my first Christmas.

Mi Mi’s Pizza Dough

Makes 1 large pizza

INGREDIENTS

1 package active dry yeast

1 cup warm water (this recipe has been modified throughout the years, my Mom now uses 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup milk)

Scant 1/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup oil

4 cups flour

1 tsp. salt

DIRECTIONS

Mix yeast, warm water, sugar, and oil together.

Let “rest” (sit) for about 20 minutes until yeast starts to foam.

Add flour and salt, mix together, knead and then let rise.

Punch down the dough, then roll out the pizza, place on a greased pizza stone, top with pizza sauce and desired toppings.

Bake at 425 degrees for about 15-20 minutes, until the bottom of the crust is golden brown (you have to slip a spatula under the crust and take a peek).

Enjoy!
