Review of The Clever Cutter

Posted & filed under Chef Annie's Tips, Dishin' with Annie.

Ok, we are all familiar with this scenario…you set out to make a homemade soup, stew, or any other veggie-packed dish, and then halfway through you are ready to quit and order a pizza because you are SO. OVER. CHOPPING. VEGETABLES. And if you don’t have the constant practice like me to speed up your skills, then it could be taking you close to forever and a day to get through all that slicing and dicing (by the way, soup is considered an “all day” dish because it’s supposed to simmer on the stove, not because you are cutting vegetables for hours on end!).

So, this week I decided to review a product that just may help you cut your chopping time in half! It’s called the Clever Cutter, and it is an “As Seen on TV” product. I certainly haven’t seen it on TV, probably because I spend the majority of my days in the kitchen, rather the living room HA HA. I just happened to see it as I was checking out at Bed Bath and Beyond. What intrigued me most is that it is a knife and mini cutting board, but at the same time, it resembles a pair of scissors or pliers (see picture).  (Well, it’s a VERY mini cutting board, as you’ll see in the video, it doesn’t hold much!)The Clever Cutter

Pros:

  1. It’s inexpensive
  2. It’s self-explanatory on how to use it
  3. It has a locking feature for safe storage
  4. It’s dishwasher safe (Amen! One less dish to wash LOL)

Cons:

  1. It works best with only certain foods
  2. It can cut only one direction/way
  3. It actually slows me down

The Clever Cutter was easy to use and is best for chopping carrots and celery (as shown on packaging), scallions and herbs. You may be able to slice a small potato, but I didn’t try it. I can’t imagine being able to cut a tomato with it, except possibly a grape tomato. I tried cutting steak with it and it was an epic fail, so I would say no cutting meat. I was unable to use it when I was making carrot sticks, because the mechanism really isn’t able to cut vegetables lengthwise. At this point in my career, I can chop vegetables and herbs rather quickly so it really wasn’t for me. However, I think it could be useful for a regular Joe (haha like I am so special) who wants to speed up their basic chopping skills.

Have you used the Clever Cutter? If so, let me know your experience with it in the comments below.
